Welcome to our transfer news blog for Friday, September 14.
We may be outside of the summer transfer window, but that does not stop the rumour and speculation in the Premier League.
There less than four months before the January transfer window opens again in earnest and teams are already being linked with new signings.
Tottenham became the first club since the transfer window system was implemented in 2003 to not make a summer signing this year, so they will be hoping to do some business come January.
West Ham on the other hand did a hell of a lot of summer business, and find themselves bottom of the Premier League table after a winless first four games.
What's next for Paul Pogba? Will Ruben Loftus-Cheek remain a Chelsea player? Can Tottenham make a signing? Is John Terry really going to be playing in Russia?
Here we'll guide you through the day's top transfer rumours from around the world.
Roma plan contract talks
Serie A giants Roma are working on a number of deals at present to try and eliminate the release clauses for some key players, according to Calciomercato.
As well as looking to extend Daniele De Rossi and Edin Dzeko’s current deals in the Italian capital, Roma also want to try and remove the release clauses in Lorenzo Pellegrini and Kostas Manolas’ contracts.
Manolas was linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in the year, while Manchester United have also been linked with the defender.
Real Madrid transfer boost
Real Madrid have £330million to spend as president Florentino Perez plots the club’s next big signing, according to Spanish publication AS.
Tipped to bring in a big-name player in the summer following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus, Los Blancos were linked with moves for Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard to name a few.
The Paris Saint-Germain duo are believed to be high up on Real’s list ahead of next summer.
Spurs stars to miss out
Pochettino yesterday confirmed that Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli would be out this week after suffering injuries during the international break.
The club announced that Juan Foyth and Moussa Sissoko would also be missing.
Winks' chronic injury
Harry Winks is close to starting his first Tottenham Hotspur match for months but Mauricio Pochettino admitted to football.london that the young midfielder will always have to manage his ankle problem.
The 22-year-old central midfielder has had mixed fortunes in recent seasons. He first suffered an ankle injury at Burnley in April 2017 and it took him some time to recover from that with the pain from the problem lasting well into the following campaign.
Now Poch says that Winks is unlikely to ever play without some kind of pain ever again.
Emery gives no Gazidis assurances
Unai Emery was asked about chief executive Ivan Gazidis’ future at the club after the South African was linked with a move to AC Milan. However, Emery claimed not to know about his future, saying it was a topic the two do not discuss.
First of all, every conversation with him is speaking about us and about our work here every week. I don’t know any other news from him.Every conversation with me is speaking about us. About our performance. About our ideas. Our process. Then, for his future we didn’t speak. I think it’s one question for him.
Emery: New contract needed for Monreal
Unai Emery has stated that Arsenal need to sign a new contract with Nacho Monreal, with Barcelona reportedly interested in adding the defender as a back-up option to Jordi Alba.
Monreal has one year left on his current deal, but Emery says they are looking to tie him down to a longer contract.
First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing for Malaga, I knew him. After two months now, I can say I am happy with him. He is 32 years old, physically the performance with us: Nacho is playing with a very good level. The reason for that, for me, we need to find a new contract with him to stay together with the Arsenal team.
Chelsea and Arsenal missed out on Mbappe
Yet more tales of missed opportunities: a new book about PSG striker Kylian Mbappe states that Chelsea and Arsenal were among several clubs who missed out on signing the French superstar.
Mbappe spent a week at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground in spring 2011, meeting Didier Drogba and playing in a 7-0 friendly win against Charlton’s Under-12s.
Manchester City were also in the race to sign the striker, and by 2015 he was attracting the interest of Manchester United and Liverpool, but Arsenal showed the “greatest intent”, with Arsene Wenger travelling to Paris to try and convince the player’s family. Mbappe ultimately chose Monaco, before moving onto PSG for £166 million last year.
Spurs missed chance to sign Asensio
What a mistake this might have been. Catalan paper Mundo Deportivo have claimed that before Real Madrid made their move for Marco Asensio in 2014, Tottenham had the chance to sign him.
Apparently, scout Ramon Planes suggested Spurs should sign the attacker during Mauricio Pochettino’s first year at the club after watching him for Mallorca against Real Zaragoza, but they did not follow up on his recommendation.
FIFA plan overhaul of loan system
Could be big news here for Chelsea (among others). FIFA are supposedly planning to change their rules on loan deals, restricting the amount of players over the age of 21 that are allowed to be sent on temporary transfers.
The Blues have a bit of a reputation for their use of the loan market, stockpiling players and sending them out to various teams, including ‘sister-club’ Vitesse Arnhem. But the days of sending out an entire squad’s worth of talent could be coming to an end.
German paper SportBild are reporting that there will be no limit on the loan of players under the age of 21 who have been at the club for an extended time, but there could be a limit for those above that age. Think Michi Batshuayi, Bakayoko and Kurt Zouma among others.
Chelsea set to lose Fabregas on a free
Uncertain times ahead for Cesc Fabregas? Could be: his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and there are rumours that a couple of Italian giants could make a move for him in January when he’s free to talk to other clubs.
The 31-year-old was a target for Inter in the summer, but Chelsea didn’t want to sell him at the time. And the Express say that they’re back in for him again, looking for an early bargain for next season.
Not only that, but apparently rivals Milan are interested (despite taking Chelsea LEGEND Tiemoue Bakayoko on loan in the summer). Getting the band back together already - even if they never really broke the mainstream...
Tottenham and Arsenal keen on Martial move
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has “lost patience” with Anthony Martial, according to The Sun, with Tottenham and Arsenal both said to be interested in signing the 22-year-old.
The French winger had looked set to extend his stay at Old Trafford with contact talks taking place, but those are allegedly on hold until he knows what is happening with Mourinho’s future.
Chelsea installed as joint-favourites to sign Manchester United forward
Chelsea are favourites with bookmakers Ladbrokes to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said:
It’s unlikely Rashford will lead the line at United on a regular basis any time soon. And were he to leave, we reckon there’ll be plenty in the running for his signature.
Everton and Chelsea are 4/1 joint-favourites, while Arsenal are just behind in the betting at 9/2. Elsewhere, Wolves (8/1) Real Madrid (10/1), Dortmund (10/1) and Barcelona (14/1) are also in the running.

Ajax have issued an update regarding the future of highly-rated youngster Frenkie de Jong.
The midfielder is said to be attracting interest from the likes of Tottenham and Barcelona, but former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars insists the wonderkid is going nowhere.
Barcelona can return in January if they want, but no player will leave.
